The Top Ten Broadway Songs About Loving Someone You Can’t Have

Posted by & filed under .

I have been getting all mushy lately with the holidays and wanting to fall in love.  My first thought was to do a top ten broadway songs post about ballads or love songs, but for someone who is feeling alone and watching all of their friends be in love, it is a different kind of song we need.  Some of the songs can be funny and happy because we are alone and others can be sad or depressing because we want to be in love.  Its like looking into a window and seeing a happy family when you know you have to go home alone.  Anyways, with that said, here are ten people or groups of people who may feel the same way.  The important thing to remember is to keep your head up and remember that things do get better and the holidays can be sad for everyone.

Wishing you were somehow here again from Phantom of the Opera. I think we’ve all had moments where we would wander around an old neighborhood or a dark area close to our homes and miss the people we love or wish we were back with the person we love. It doesn’t have to be a graveyard to make you feel what Christine is feeling. Here is Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again from Phantom of the Opera.

On My Own from Les Miserables.  Not only have we all had the one person we took for granted and then fell in love with, but we have all had those moments where we still get to see them but cannot say what we think.  On My Own is one of the most favorite songs in all of Broadway history and one that everyone goes to hear when they see Les Miserables.  Here is On My Own from Les Miserables.

A House is Not a Home from Promises Promises.  There is nothing worse then realizing the man or woman you love just won’t love you back.  A House is Not a Home from Promises Promises is a perfect example of how many of us feel when we realize the one we love, or wanted to love just can’t love us back.

I Still Believe from Miss Saigon.  Not only does this show have an amazing selection of love ballads, but the song I Still Believe is probably one of my favorite broadway love songs and ballads of all times.  I don’t even need to explain why it is such an amazing song and one that makes me want to cry each time I hear it.

If you didn’t think a cartoon could make you cry, you forgot about Feivel.  In An American Tale Feivel and his sister sing a song to the moon called Somewhere Out There and it is one of the most beautiful ballads ever.  Two cartoon mice have created a song that is sung at weddings and made thousands of people tear up.  Here is Somewhere out There from An American Tale.

I don’t think this list would be even near complete if I didn’t have What I Did for Love from A Chorus Line in it.  Imagine giving away everything you ever loved or worked for and having it go away.  That is what this person is feeling.

The next song on the list is from Andrew LLoyd Webber’s Cats.  The only person in the world that could set a standard so high that not even the most amazing performer Barbara Streisand could touch it is Betty Buckley.  Not only did Betty Buckley not leave a dry eye in the house when she performed Memories from Cats, but just watch a true Actress take the stage.

I really wanted to put the Patti Lupone version of Another Suitcase in Another Hall on here but the Madonna version was the only good quality one I could find.  Not only do you feel like you just don’t belong as your walking by your ex’s apartment or house, but even your own bed can feel alone.  When someone dies and you see there house it just looks empty and dead but you remember everyone that was inside and all of the fun times you had there.  If you go on vacation with your friends and then you go back a few years later alone it is like seeing ghosts everywhere.  That is what this song is like for me.  Here is Another Suitcase in Another Hall from Evita.

Lily’s Hazel Eyes from The Secret Garden has to be another one of those songs that makes you smile and remember everything good about someone and why you miss them.  Sometimes when you meet someone new you try to avoid them because they remind you of someone you loved in the past, but sometimes that small reminder can make you fall in love and help end those feelings of loss.  Lily’s Hazel Eyes from The Secret Garden is one of those songs.

When thinking of what song to put here for the number ten song about being lonely or missing someone I had a million choices.  Empty tables from Les Miserables, Maybe from Annie, there are great songs from Passion and Sunday in the Park with George, Jekyll and Hyde have a few amazing songs that would have been a perfect fit and even Little Lamb from Gypsy.  You could choose just about any Lament song from Witches to Evita and even songs from Tick Tick Boom or Rent.  The only one I kept thinking of though was the song For Good from Wicked.  For Good from Wicked made me cry when I heard it the first time and it was a definite perfect fit for the top ten broadway songs about feeling alone or sad.  Here is For Good from Wicked.  If you have another song that you think should be on this list, please feel free to leave a comment below.
