Avenue Q – It Sucks To Be Me Video

Posted by & filed under , .

I have a friend who is constantly complaining that his life sucks.  He is looking for a job and kind of lives far outside of the city but what he forgets is that he does have friends and does have options, he just needs to motivate a bit more to get out of his stupor.  We recently just had a back and forth and he left to go have a cigarette break.  The thing is that he is a great person and a very good looking guy and he has his health, except for the smoking part, so I tried to convince him he needs to get over his depression and start to get more proactive with finding a job and finding a partner instead of sitting around and moping in his house.  After he went out for a cigarette I was getting ready for showtunes and he got me thinking of a song from the hit broadway musical Avenue Q.

The song is called It Sucks To Be Me and is sung by a huge part of the cast.  It is all about people sitting around moping about how bad their lives suck and it actually helps to start to motivate them to get over it and find a way to fix it.  Each character in the show tries to top the other characters about why their lives suck and in the end it is the character that plays Gary Coleman that wins.

This song is one of the songs that made this show famous and is one of my favorite showtunes from the musical Avenue Q.  It starts out with one of the main characters coming out of his apartment building to throw out his trash where he runs into his love interest in the show Kate.  From there they talk about how and why their lives suck.  Once Kate finished singing about how her life sucks you get to hear a fight between a gay roommate and straight roommate and from there on out more and more characters come in to sing about why their lives suck.  Avenue Q is an amazing musical and although it is not family friendly or for little kids, it is a perfect show for grown ups and high school students. The music is fun, the characters are puppets but also have real personalities and are people that many of us can relate to and the acting and singing is absolutely amazing.  Avenue Q is currently playing in many major cities and on tour and a show that I highly recommend.  You can see it in NY and it also has a home in London.  Avenue Q is an amazing show and the song It Sucks To Be Me is hilarious.  Here is the original cast singing It Sucks To Be Me.

Avenue Q in Chicago

Avenue Q

So I got an invite to see Avenue Q in Chicago Illinois this week.  Not only was I absolutely thrilled to see that Avenue Q was going to be going to the Bank of America Theatre in Chicago Illinois starting in early May, but that is also the theatre that had hosted one of Chicago’s longest running musicals Wicked.   Not only do I love the show and will get into why it will be a must see Broadway show in Chicago, but I love the theatre it will be in.  Lately I have been disappointed with theatres like the national theatre in Washington DC, but this is one of the classic goddy theatres in America.

The Bank of America Theatre or also known as the Oriental Theatre in downtown Chicago is one of those old theatres that you never forget.  It is completely over decorated in everything asian from India to Tibet to Thailand and more.  Everything is overadorned and you’ll find details on just about everything.  It gives you that classy, glamorous feeling that you would expect when you go to a theatre and that is one of the reasons I love these old fashioned theatres.  They really bring the class back into a show.  The only thing missing is one of the giant chandeliers that you always except to fall and sort of hope they do so you can see them up close.  Anyways onto why Avenue Q is a must see show in Chicago at the Bank of America Oriental Theatre.

Avenue is one of those funny shows that combines a couple of different shows and appeals to just about everyone.  I already did a review of it in this post about Avenue Q so I’m not going to re review it but because that would be overkill, however this is one of those shows that is almost impossible to have a bad performance with.

The Actors lucked out that get to do this show because besides the Gary Coleman character everyone is pretty much a muppet and has the ability to make a vocal mistake because they can move the muppet into a funny or embarrassed position or even just play it off like that is how it was supposed to sound.   They have a lot of room to mess around with the show, even though the producer would be pissed but in reality, the script is hilarious and because of the fact that they are muppets and singing about porn, a couple mistakes played off well can actually be even funnier.

I might actually make a trip to Chicago specifically just to see Avenue Q at the Bank of America Theatre because this really is a show that is worth seeing.  It is one that will almost always make you laugh and after you have heard the soundtrack you will definitely sing along.  Avenue Q always gets 4 out of 5 stars for me because you remember it, you love the songs and it makes you laugh or brings out emotions.  Avenue Q is a must see show and because it is in one of Chicago’s most fabulous theatres, it is even more of a must see.

Avenue Q Reviews…Is Avenue Q Worth it?

Avenue Q

If there is one modern day show that I not only love because of its ability to make me laugh, but also because it is just plain hilarious for everyone…at least teenagers and up,,,,is Avenue Q.

Avenue Q is the story of a young man, well more of a Puppet or a Muppet, that really hits it home if you are just out of college, if you have kids who are in highschool and graduating or if you are or have college students that are about to or just graduated.

The show starts with a character looking for an apartment in a city styled like NYC, unfortunately he cannot afford much since he has just graduated college and has no skills and no one will hire him to teach him anything.  He works his way from the expensive areas like Avenue A, B, C and others and finally hits Avenue Q where it may not be classy, but the people are friendly and it turns out that Gary Coleman from TV’s Different Strokes is the resident manager.  Not only does the neighborhood welcome this new resident, but they decide to sing songs about different things relevant to them, their lives and their society.

They sing about not having a job even though they have a B.A. in English, about how their lives suck, about wanting jobs, how the internet was built for Porn, that there is a lot of things to do even though you don’t have a job and you may not have a lot of money as well as falling in love with each other and showing it by sharing a mix tape.

One of my favorite songs from the show Avenue  has to be the ballad song Mix Tape.  It is about falling in love and how a mixtape is a way to express your feelings for the other person by choosing songs that are relevant for that person and how you feel.  Sure the tape has a couple of oddball songs in it like Fat Bottom Girls, but overall I love the part where it says “I Have to Say I Love You in a Song”.  It was really sweet and they even say that.  It reminds me of when I was in and just graduated from college.  Then the main character asks the female Muppet Kate out on a date, and not to the strip club to see another Muppet Christmas Eve.

The show walks through a ton of social situations like coming out of the closet, searching for a job, feeling alone and depressed and even how to overcome some obstacles.  It shows that people really do care, if you know the right people they will go out of their way to help you when you need it and is a really fun show to watch and has a soundtrack you will  want to play for everyone and sing along to while you drive or even get ready for work in the morning.

Overall the show is fun, has a ton of jokes, a soundtrack that is great to listen to even if you haven’t seen the show and extremely entertaining.  It gives you everything you want from a show.

Drama, comedy, something to think about and remember and it even combines a very famous kids show that we all grew up to and mixes it with the show Rent.  I love Avenue Q and remember seeing cabs covered in faux Muppet fur in Las Vegas and I think in NYC promoting the show when it had first come out.

Avenue Q gets four out of five stars from me being original, funny and a great time out at the theatre.  Just to be clear, I know the story line isn’t extremely original and is just mixing a famous kids TV show with the musical Rent, but the way they did it and because of the catchy music and fun songs I will say that they added their own spin on the show and made it their own which makes it an original show.

I love Avenue Q and highly recommend seeing it.  However if you are taking small kids to the theatre and don’t want them around swear words, this show may not be for you.  Avenue Q gets 4 out of 5 stars from me and if you loved or hated the show, please feel free to share your opinions here.
