Showtunes About Transportation Week – 6 – Showtunes About Buses

Posted by & filed under , , .

One of the most well known buses is Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. Thanks to Bette Midler, the movie musical became an actual musical and is currently on broadway. The bus is one of the most important props in both the show and the movie. It helps to show emotion, protection, bigotry, drunk driving and murdering teletubbies, as well as a way for people who don’t get a long to bond with each other and two new people to fall in love. The Bus is one of the most important props and even characters in Priscilla. It not only is what each character relies on, but it is part of a ton of jokes.

Bernadette uses it to run over animals and teletubbies. Felicia uses it to perform an opera in mid air on a giant high heel shoe over the audience’s heads and the people who disliked gays used it to get their message across about gays not being welcomed. In the regular movie it was a huge part, not to mention gave the movie it’s name, but in the show they took a regular bus and added in a ton of LED lights that work like a movie screen and something to paint on, an entire set inside with a bar and even a moveable and trap door filled roof where the characters can come in and out of in new costumes to surprise you. The bus is one of the most important parts of this musical and it helps to teach people to rely on each other, get a long and even deal with stress when you realize you need to focus instead of panicking. It’s kind of funny when you think of the show because you think of it as the story of three drag queens on a bus, but when you actually think about it, without the bus you wouldn’t have a show.

If it didn’t break down you wouldn’t have met Bob and Felicia wouldn’t have ended up doing drugs and learning that not everyone is gay friendly. You wouldn’t get to learn about the characters and hear about their lives and you wouldn’t get to see messages that really drive what hate means home. The bus is one of the most important things in Priscilla Queen of the Desert which is why it is on the list of showtunes about travel and transportation.

Should you Buy Priscilla Queen of the Desert Tickets on Broadway?

After coming back from Vegas I had to go to NYC for a couple of meetings. Since I was in NYC anyways it had to take a lot of convincing me, but I ended up deciding to see a show. Instead of going to see Follies with Elaine Page and Bernadette Peters, I decided to see Priscilla Queen of the Desert the Musical because I wanted something happy and fun. I had a great seat in the center of the first balcony which was absolutely the best place to buy a ticket for Priscilla Queen of the Desert the Musical. But should you buy Priscilla Queen of the Desert tickets?

Priscilla Queen of the Desert the musical is a show produced by Bette Midler. If you have ever seen a Bette Midler show then you know to expect a ton of foul humor and jokes, tacky but fun music and everything done over the top. If you’re a fan then you’ll probably love the show. If you liked the movie version then you may enjoy the show. If you hate bright lights, glitter, beads, sequins and feathers, do not go to this show. Would I recommend going to see Priscilla Queen of the Desert on broadway, yes, but only if there isn’t another show that you are dying to see.

Priscilla Queen of the Desert the musical is a fun filled and high energy dance musical with as much shiney things as you could ever want to see. The only way to fit anymore sequins on the stage would be to actually bedazzle it, but the actors would probably have an issue with that. The show stays very true to the movie and they keep all of the important scenes, but they do update the show to include cell phones, they changed Abba to Madonna and also upated some of the jokes which are from when the movie was produced. One thing that I absolutely loved was that Bette added in her own sense of humor and took it overboard. Not only did they add a ton of new jokes in, but they added in a few new props as well.

When Bernadette is driving the bus, she ends up killing a few things. You see a street sign go by with a Kangaroo and all of the sudden a dead kangaroo goes by with glitter blood all over it. Then you see a sign for Koala’s and a giant dead Koala goes by covered in glitter blood. After the Koala you get Tinky Winky and sure enough, a giant Tinky Winky from Teletubbies goes by covered in glitter blood. The show is absolutely hilarious and with the new jokes is even better.

Bette Midler keeps everything from the ping pong ball routine in the bar to Felicia singing on the high heel on the bus. If you want a great seat for Priscilla Queen of the Desert on broadway, you shouldn’t sit in the orchestra, but you should sit in the first balcony. You will not only get to see Felicia come out over the middle of the crowd in front of you, but you’ll get to see everything on stage better as well. Tickets for Priscilla Queen of the Desert the musical are reasonably priced and you can order them through this site by clicking on the banners to the right. If you want a fun show that is really off beat and will get you singing, Priscilla Queen of the Desert the musical is a good fit for you. I probably wouldn’t see it again, but I would recommend going at least once if you are looking for a show to see. If you’ve seen Priscilla Queen of the Desert the musical on broadway, feel free to leave a comment below and if you haven’t order your Priscilla Queen of the Desert tickets by clicking on the banners to the right.

Poll – Would You Pay More To Hear a Couple of Instruments?

Posted by & filed under , , .

Today on XM Radio, Seth Rudetsky said that the Music union is now suing the show Priscilla Queen of the Desert because they are using pre-recorded violins (or something like that) instead of a real orchestra. With your opinions of union workers and remembering that I am not taking sides on this, I want to ask what you think? Would you pay more money for already expensive broadway tickets in order to have a real full orchestra playing or would you want to keep the already high prices where they are and have them use state of the art sound equipment that sounds exactly like the real instruments for some of the instruments. Let’s go into this a little bit more.

Here is one argument that I could see for the music union that I would agree with. There is no comparison to hearing a real musical instrument, if you have a trained ear for music and are a musician on your own. If you are sitting right in the front and watch the bows on the violins or see the musicians playing, it really means something. I personally love to hear the musicians playing, but when I am at a show and sitting balcony, a few rows or more away from the stage, etc… I’ll be honest I cannot tell the difference. For most of america, I don’t think anyone knows that they are listening to a recording vs. a real instrument. Also to that point, there are still some musicians playing in the orchestra pit, just not a full orchestra anymore. This leads me to a point about the public going to see a show.

If the music union would win the lawsuit against Priscilla Queen of the Desert, which they have a right to fight for their jobs, broadway audiences would get to hear the difference between a recording and a gorgeous and beautiful full orchestra. Many people won’t be able to tell the difference, but there is something amazing about hearing a real orchestra, especially when they can add little twists to each song to make it unique. On the other hand, tickets are already extremely expensive and if they have to pay for musicians for 8 shows a week, that is going to increase the prices again. Is the sound that most of us cannot tell the difference with worth paying even more for already inflated tickets? I have one last point to make for those of you who think you can tell the difference between a recording with state of the art sound and a real instrument. Did you know that the performers don’t perform every song? take Phantom of the Opera.

Very few people could hit all of those notes every show, 8 shows a week. It would do a lot of damage to your voice or at least make you have to rest your voice and take a lot of time off. Also, when the Phantom and I think Christine are running around the background and climbing ladders, do you think they are actually singing? Nope, those are the Actors voices pre-recorded. I bet that not many broadway audience members actually knew either of those things. The fact is that the sound quality is so good now that the majority of people would never know the difference if they didn’t find out on blogs or shows like Seth Rudetsky’s Big Fat Broadway on Sirius XM.

Here is my opinion. For some shows with modern music I don’t care if some of the instruments are pre-recorded. I cannot tell the difference unless I am sitting right there or there are no speakers in the theatre at all for the actors or for the orchestra. Then you really hear what they sound like, as long as you are close enough to hear. If it is an older show with clear solos and where the voice has to match the instrument, it is amazing to hear the two together. Sort of like the person who sings in Candide for the song Glitter and Be Gay with the flute. The person’s voice and the instrument sound amazing together. So back to my question, this is just for you to think about because I cannot get my poll to work, or you can leave a comment below. Would you honestly be happy or willing to pay more for already expensive tickets to see a broadway show that has a couple of more instruments and when you cannot tell the difference between pre-recorded or live or are you happy to see it for a bit less money and have a few less instruments and you cannot tell the difference between the two?

Priscilla Queen of the Desert the Musical

Priscilla Queen of the Desert the Musical

Since Friday is coming up in a couple of minutes and we are closing out on gay week and drag week I was thinking of what gets gayer than the three bears performing Say a Little Prayer from Glee.  The only thing that is going to top that which we used to top A Little More Mascara and I am What I am from La Cage Au Follies is Priscilla Queen of the Desert and instead of just showing you a fabulous video and clip from this fabulous new hit Musical in London I would also review the show and the basic main story line.

Priscilla Queen of the Desert was one of the original Drag Queen and Gay Movies to ever hit the main stream media.  Much like Hairspray it dealt with taboo issues and also went from a cult movie to a musical production.  Now we’ll have to see if they end up doing another version of the movie and changing it again to be more appropriate for even more audiences in a new movie form with new music like the Musical version of Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

Priscilla Queen of the Desert is the story of three drag queens who are doing what every Drag Queen wants to do.  Put on a show and perform for a fabulous audience and crowd, not to mention star in Austrailia’s version of a Las Vegas (The goal stage of every Drag Queen in the USA) casino which turns out to be owned and operated by one of the Queen’s exs who also turns out to be an actual female.  They sort of traded each other in for a new pair of shoes and an argument over whose gown looked better.  I vote for the chandelier gown worn by the more feminine of the two, the Guy.

The story progresses as the three queens work their way through the desert and get stranded.  While they are stuck in the middle of the Austrailian outback they begin to talk about their past and different things they have overcome.  After you get through all of the boring emotional stuff they begin to give you what you actually came to see in the show. a bunch of Drag Divas in ridiculous costumes lipsinking the lyrics to other people’s songs.

The not only perform for a group of Australian Aborigines but they also end up in a small town and the one almost gets gay

bashed, they get to perform in another small town but get shown up by an ex Asian prostitute (who then loses her husband to one of the queens) in one of the movies most memorable moments, the ping pong ball trick which you see referenced to this day in spoofs.

Eventually the queens make it to Alice Springs to put on their final show and during the trip you will not only want to get up and sing to some of the most fun disco music but the bright costumes, the lively acting, the high energy of everything and the LED tour bus will not only leave a positive memory and leave you singing for days but you will walk out in an amazing mood.

Priscilla Queen of the Desert isn’t one of those shows that is deep or makes you want to cry but it is like Jersey Boys where it is a fun loving funny and feel good musical.  It is currently playing at the Queen’s Theatre (Ironic isn’t it) in London England’s West End and tickets are definitely worth the price if you want something fun and different to do than the normal hum drum or classic theatre show.  It may not be the best show for kids but is definitely one that you will be able to take almost anyone to for a fun and feel good time out.  I actually loved Priscilla Queen of the Desert even though this normally isn’t my type of show and because I left singing the songs and loving the show I have to give it a 4 out of 5 stars rating.

If you have seen Priscilla Queen of the Desert the Musical please feel free to share your pictures and leave a message below in the comments section.

Here is a clip from the shows trailer that I found to share with you all. You’ll see the insane costumes, the amazing set and see how fabulous the show actually is.
