The First Wives Club starring Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton is one of my favorite movies. Not only is it a fun chick flick, but the characters are a ton of fun and actually somewhat realistic. What I also love is how they eventually say screw it to their ex husbands and take their revenge.
During the movie the ex husbands beat up on the wives and take advantage of them. Some of them hide money, others play with their emotions and one tries to ruin the one wives career. Eventually the three ladies decide that they’ve had enough and they decide to plan their revenge. Somewhere during their revenge planning, they realize that it isn’t fair that they are only taking revenge on their own ex husbands, but they could help every woman in NYC to have somewhere to go in case they ever have an ex husband who is treating them poorly. The opening night party of the woman’s help center named after their friend who committed suicide because of her ex husband is where the song You Don’t Own Me comes in. (They actually start to sing it earlier because it was a song they sang in college together, but this is where they actually sing it.)
Anyways, I was on a date with someone and then all of the sudden he started to say I couldn’t do certain things, I had to stop doing others and I wasn’t allowed to go out with my friends. I could see him trying that if we were in a relationship, but after one date and a couple of lunches that was definitely not acceptable and why I thought of the song You Don’t Own Me from The First Wives Club for a post today. Not only would it be a bad decision to continue to date him, but he would completely try to take over my life, and that is something that is not going to happen. Anyways, I love the song You Don’t Own Me from The First Wives Club an it definitely a fun one to sing a long with, especially if you are just out of a relationship.
