I’ve been swamped with work lately which is why I haven’t been posting, but today this video showed up in my Facebook feed and it is worth sharing. It’s Tchaikovsky’s Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies played on wine glasses. Not only is this song amazing on it’s own, just like wine, but when you combing the two it is insane.
They call the instrument a glass harp, I call it a seriously fun table for wine pong (better than beer) but if you use water, why not play some awesome music. This video is the perfect way to get you ready for the holidays.
We’ve heard rap on broadway before. In The Heights, Rent and even If/Then (I think) had different styles of it. But what happens when you take incredible Hip-Hop artists like Jay-z, Lil Wayne, Rhianna and others, give the lyrics to broadway singers and then have them put the lyrics to popular showtunes or showtune styled piano?
I’m completely over the whole flash mob thing, but I am deathly afraid that this will end up happening at my wedding as well…especially because of all of my musical theatre, junky friends. Not that I’m getting married soon, but this is definitely a possibility lol. I saw this video and wasn’t going to share it originally, but then I heard some of the male voices and began to fall in love with it.
Thernardier and his wife were pretty weak which was disappointing, but the girl in the black dress sounded amazing. The blond girl in the beginning was really weak as well. There is a shorter girl that had an ok voice, but you don’t actually get to see her, except when she is finishing. The majority of the men in this video had great voices. I can almost guarantee this is probably a wedding from a bunch of people who either go to karaoke or went to musical theatre school and remained friends. My freshman year of college I went to Point Park College, which is now Point Park University which is known for dance and musical theatre. This is actually sort of what lunch was like.
Whenever a new show would come out or someone would start singing a melody to themselves, a lot of other people would join in. During finals or mid terms, you’d hear everyone practicing in their rooms or in the halls until at least 3 or 4 in the morning. I almost miss being able to hear really amazing voices all day and being able to walk into any room, say I have a song stuck in my head and have at least one or two people belt it out perfectly and on tune. It was actually kind of fun. Later this month a few of us are getting together in NYC to go see a couple of shows as well. I haven’t actually seen some of these people since 1999 and the early 2000’s so it’ll be a lot of fun to get together again. We’re also having another meetup in the West End in London for a couple of us that moved out there. Anyways, I am completely afraid this will end up happening at my wedding, and if it doesn’t, I’ll probably be even more pissed that it didn’t.
I was going to post a sad or boring song because I broke up with my partner a few weeks ago, but then I realized that I should just say screw it. I was at showtunes night the other day and they played the broadway dance remix I Just Want to F*cking Dance which is a really bad dance song, but a great video mash up of a ton of broadway shows. Although I Just Want to F*cking Dance isn’t the best song, I love that it is all about just having fun and not caring.
Instead of being depressed or wanting to stay in, I ended up calling my friends and going out. There is completely not point in just sitting at home being sad or complaining about people being jerks. Instead it is important to go out and have fun and meet someone new. That’s why I love songs like I Just Want to F*cking Dance. It is a ton of random fun scenes from different shows and broadway stars just having fun.
Even though I Just Want to F*cking Dance isn’t an actual showtune, it does feature a ton of musicals and is about having fun so if you’re in a bad mood or had a breakup or just want to sit through a really bad remix but a pretty cool video mashup, then watch the video for I Just Want to F*cking Dance. They do use the F word in the song so if you are at work, you may not want to play this song. If you don’t mind or you won’t get in trouble for playing a song with the F word, then go for it. I Just Want to F*cking Dance is a fun mash up and perfect if you need something to make you get out of a bad mood. I’m over the break up and ready to go out and have fun and meet someone new. If you are down or just got over a break up, then find something to help pull yourself out of it and have fun. When new shows hit broadway and take off they like to do cross promotions and charity events where the show combines with an older show. Avenue Q and Fiddler on the Roof made a perfect match with Avenue Jew. Unfortunately you don’t always get a good combination for shows by combining them, even when they have similar topics. Take Spring Awakening and Grease.
In the intro to the video where the original cast of Spring Awakening auditions for Grease, they even mention a few of the similarities, they try to show why they are similar but the producers are in for a bit of a shock by today’s youth. Both shows are about teen problems. They go into pregnancy, abuse, sex, parents who ignore their kids or don’t pay attention, dropping out of school and bullying by teachers as well as drugs and real life issues. The biggest difference though is that today’s kids seem to be a lot more dramatic (even if it takes place almost a hundred years ago and in another country). Spring Awakening for examples gets pretty graphic while in Grease they keep their clothes on.
Today’s kids go for the drama while the kids in Grease never actually fight or address an issue. In Grease they make fun of each other but they also stick together like a team. In Spring Awakening they try but end up not being able to help each other out as they are to afraid to do anything or stand up to their parents, with the exception of one character. Even though the shows have similarities in that they are about teenage issues and drama, they are completely different in that one is for fun and one is about serious issues and leaves you in shock.
You have the hand jive in both, but they mean different things. You have pregnancy in both but one of them results in death. You have a school dropout in one and she goes back to high school. You have someone who didn’t drop out but was forced into failing without knowing it and ended up killing himself. You have gays making out and falling in love in one. You have a bunch of guys fixing each other’s hair and showing off their asses to the other in the other. They both have the same issues but when you try to mix today’s shows and youth with the teens from a few decades ago there is a huge difference.
Although the two shows probably shouldn’t be combined, it does make for a funny video. Here is the cast of Spring Awakening auditioning for Grease.
