On a recent visit to New York City with my cousin, his wife and my youngest daughter, Clementine, we traveled from our hotel on the lower east side to Broadway to see the magnificent musical “On a Clear Day you can see forever” starring Harry Connick, Jr. It was a Saturday night and although we had a fantastic time at the show and wonderful early dinner in a little Italian bistro in the West Village, I was ready to go back to the hotel and crash. My cousin, however, had a different plan in mind. He took us on a tour of restaurant row, which ended at a small piano bar and restaurant named ‘Don’t Tell Mama’ on 46th street.

The place was hopping but we walked in and were welcomed by the hostess who made it her mission to find us somewhere to sit. The one room was really crowded and we didn’t want to sit in the restaurant and have a full meal. However, it turned out that our timing was perfect. The ‘Show Tunes’ room had just opened for the night and we were one of the first groups in. We were seated close to the piano and gradually the place started to fill. The pianist was extremely talented and entertaining. He sang and played many tunes including an amusing version of ‘Part of My World’ from The Little Mermaid and a rousting rendition of ‘Caberet’ which had everyone in the room joining in. The ambiance was relaxed and very friendly. Our waiter and barman also had incredible voices and took turns entertaining us as well as supplying us with great cocktails and delicious desserts. Several of the audience, including my daughter, Clementine, signed up to sing at the ‘open mic’ and the quality of the talent did not disappoint. We didn’t leave until 2am and it was well worth staying up late for. All in all a great place to end a fantastic Saturday night in NYC!!

This was the night before I went to see Priscilla Queen of the Dessert and while I was having fun with my ex-boyfriend and his friends at Don’t Tell Mama Piano Bar in NYC, the talent didn’t stop with just the piano player. The Bartender sang a great version of I’m Alive from the show Next to Normal and other members of the audience, including myself who had laryngitis at the time gave an effort to completely destroy a There’s a Fine Fine Line from Avenue Q. One person in the audience happened to be Julie’s Daughter Clementine.

Clementine sang a few songs from Once Upon a Mattress and did an excellent job for someone who is only 16. She has a great voice and is learning how to make a connection with the audience. Once she learns how to give eyes, sing out and how to turn a song into her own, she will be absolutely ready to hit a school for musical theatre or even start auditioning for shows. Clementine Harvey could make it if she learns how to really push herself out there and I am very happy to say that her Mom who wrote the top part of this review about Don’t Tell Mama Piano Bar in NYC, gave me a couple of videos of Clementine Harvey singing to share with you.

Don’t Tell Mama Piano Bar in NYC is one of my favorite places to go. Not only do I get to meet tons of fun theatre lovers every time I go, but I also get to hear people who are trying to make it on Broadway. It is absolutely fun and I highly recommend you stop by and sit in the showtunes room at Don’t Tell Mama Piano Bar in NYC.

Last week when I was in Las Vegas I wasn’t sure what show to see. I love the Cirque shows, but I’ve seen them all and Celine wasn’t performing so I ran into the promoters of a new show at Ceasar’s Palace called Absinthe. Not only did they sell me on why I should see Absinthe at Ceasar’s Palace, but they also gave me complimentary tickets so that I could share the show with all of you here. Feel free to leave a comment or any Absinthe Las Vegas Reviews below.

Absinthe the show at Ceasar’s Palace is a spoof of a Cirque De Soliel show. Although they do have amazing acrobatic and dance acts in the show, they tie in a ton of raunchy X rated humor, traditional burlesque dancing and singing as well as a ton of actual audience participation. The show can run anywhere from 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 hour and 45 minutes depending on the acts, audience participation and how much fun everyone is having. The show is set up in a tent outside of Ceasar’s Palace and the stage is a circular platform that rises and lowers.

The seating style is arena where everyone sits on very uncomfortable wooden chairs in a circle around the platform stage. The walls are covered in pictures and random trinkets that makes you think of the movie Moulin Rouge and they have a bar which sells a ton of different themed drinks including Lucent Absinthe. The lighting definitely fits the seductive and erotic theme of the show, and I love the opening and consistent green theme to stick with the Green Fairy which is one of the most well known characteristics and nicknames of absinthe.

Absinthe Las Vegas starts out with a contortionist and acrobat names Vladimir who comes home to his house and prepares a shot of absinthe for himself. All of the sudden he begins his journey through the show and performs the first routine of the night which is him stacking chairs and performing acrobatics on them. Not only is his routine insane, but he does a press handstand at the very top of the tent just before it’s time for the first burlesque act to come out of the roof and perform a song as the Green Fairy.

This is Vladimir’s intro and the next video is the chair routine.

Absinthe Las Vegas is an extremely erotic and seductive show with X rated humor, incredibly hot performers and everything you could want from a show in Las Vegas. The ring master makes fun of the entire audience, Penny tells off beat jokes and they even have an impromptu lesbian surprise with two random audience members. If you’re looking for a cirque de soliel styled show but that has all of the sin that you hope to find in Las Vegas, Absinthe at Ceasar’s Palace is perfect for you. Tickets to absinthe are well worth the money and although the chairs are uncomfortable and the drinks are overpriced, you will love the show. I highly recommend buying Absinthe Tickets at Ceasar’s Palace and would probably go back to see the show again since it will change nightly because of the audience participation and the ringmaster. If you’re looking for a new show that is a bit different but is still something you would expect from Las Vegas, buy tickets to Absinthe at Ceasar’s Palace and you will get everything from comedy to singing and some incredible cirque de soliel styled performances. I highly recommend Absinthe Las Vegas.

This is the roller skating routine without the end performance which was absolutely insane. You’ll have to see Absinthe Las Vegas to find out what they do!

Spiderman: Turn off your expectations

Posted Monday, October 24th, 2011

If you’re a fan of classic broadway shows, musical theater, and great entertainment experiences you may have heard about the most expensive broadway production every mounted. You must be living under a rock if you’re hearing this for the first time, but They made a Broadway Show out of Spiderman!

If you came here hoping that this would be a big bash-fest, you’re about to be disappointed – I enjoyed the show, and would see it again, but not in New York. Keep reading – it gets better.

What’s Wrong with Spiderman?

Despite being in previews for an extended period  and going through several revamps, the story still seems glued together like the panels on a storyboard. The production feels disjointed and heavily edited – unlike some well written stories that flow easily from scene to scene.

The story of Arachne is explored from the beginning of the show and the mythical spider herself appears a few times to guide Peter Parker on his journey – which is entirely pointless and does not advance the story in any way, but is very cool to watch. You can see the money at work in this show – it is very dark, and very beautiful.

In truth, this extravagant, lumbering, largely plotless and tedious story depends on some decent music and some amazing technical effects to pull off it’s magic. The characters are two-dimensional, which isn’t surprising since they are lifted from the pages of a comic book.

So What’s Good about Spiderman on Broadway?

Reeve Carney (Spiderman) does a good job with a physically and emotionally demanding role, he’s the right man for the job, but did look very strained as he descended from the ceiling to take his final bow at the end.

Spiderman is not high art – but it is good fun. It’s a universal studios attraction, it’s a ride movies kind of feel. It’s exciting – Spiderman has huge set pieces. It’s got not so very good music – despite having a score written by Bono – the only song stuck in my head after the show was the incredible choreography and slow-motion effects in bullying by numbers and the very catchy “A Freak Like Me” – which you should now watch before you continue:

What’s the best place to sit for Spiderman Turn off the dark at the Foxwoods theater in New York?

Don’t spring for the front row premium seats – you will cry when you realize that all the cool flying effects are happening behind you, or so far above the stage you’ll have to crane your neck to see what’s going on. TKTS tickets are a crap-shoot, if you get stuck on the main floor under the balconies you’ll miss some of the high-wire antics as well. Your best bet for a great view of everything is to get some of the “flying circle” seats.

Since spiderman makes such a huge visual impact, consider strongly paying a premium for the first three rows of the first balcony (mezz), or the first row of the 2nd balcony. Mezz Center would be my choice if I was going back, or 2nd balcony right side (There is a landing pad there that is used by Spiderman a few times during the show, and would give children a huge thrill to see Spiderman drop down in front of them.

My last word on Spiderman

The real truth about Spiderman is that it is not a traditional Broadway show. This is a Universal Studios attraction that was built in the wrong place. Broadway is the place for musical theater it’s a place for comedy it’s the place for high art.

If I was recommending a show for your first Broadway experience.. I would not recommend Spiderman – I’d recommend you see anything else: Go see Phantom, How to Succeed or  Wicked, but if you seen everything else and you’re looking for something that’s fun, campy and you happen to want to see Spiderman swing around a theater (which is very cool), go and see Spiderman. It’s not a bad show. It’s just not a very good show. It’s average.

Average is fine and good, but when you frame it as some other types of entertainment the story changes: It’s a terrible play, middling musical, overpriced and over-hyped production that will run it’s course and eventually find a home at Universal Studios or possibly Disneyworld. Which is exactly where it belongs – in a theme park full of families and comic book fans, not on Broadway.

Just don’t expect too much in the way of tradition from this show.

Getting Tickets to ‘Turn off the dark’

If you’re hoping to buy your tickets, you should consider the box office only if you can get the best seating area for this show (see above notes). Failing that, check the TKTS booth as you will almost certainly be able to get some at 40% off at the last minute, try to avoid being under the balcony on this one, you will miss some of the aerial action, but not much. GoldStar had an offer for Spiderman tickets not long ago, which tells you everything you need to know: the show sells out, but only with the help of discounted ticket offers like this one from back in March.

Halloween Special for Spiderman the Musical

Playbill is reporting that:

At both the 1:30 PM and 7:30 PM performances on Oct. 26, 2011 the first 100 people at the Foxwoods Theatre box office one hour prior to curtain can get one child’s ticket free with the purchase of one full-price adult ticket when the child (age 4-15) is wearing a full Spider-Man costume. (All children in costume at the matinee performance will also be invited to meet Spider-Man and take a photo with him immediately following the performance.)

This offer is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Additional allocations may be offered based on availability. The free kid’s ticket is redeemable for ages 4-15 only with purchase of an adult ticket at the $149.50 price level.

Costumes may be homemade or store-bought but must be a head-to-toe resemblance of Spider-Man. “Management and/or box office staff has the right to determine eligibility of the costume,” according to a press statement.

I just got back from NYC and was extremely disappointed to see that Catch Me if You Can the Musical has been canceled. The show was actually pretty amazing and they did an excellent job with the choreography and the music. Unfortunately though they decided to close the show. Because the show was closed they quit printing window cards (broadway posters) which also means that everyone and every store was sold out, except for one, 1 Shubert Alley in NYC.

1 Shubert Alley is the original broadway merchandise store in NYC. Not only was it one of the first to start selling official broadway merchandise, but the location makes you want to spin around and belt out a few tunes. That is because 1 Shubert Alley is located in between about 5 theatres and just off of times square in the heart of broadway. Unlike the other stores which are owned by the company that owns 1 Shubert Alley, 1 Shubert Alley is a tiny room packed full of broadway everything.

You can find everything from window cards (broadway posters) to magnets, cd’s, tshirts and everything else from a majority of the shows that are currently running to shows that have recently closed (including hard to find merchandise like my Catch Me if You Can Broadway Poster because not many people know of this store because it is down an alley next to a theatre) and even merchandise from some of the more classic shows that are either touring or closed a long time ago. The only thing you cannot find at 1 Shubert Alley are window card frames (broadway poster frames) which is probably only because there isn’t that much space inside the store to store them. You can however buy window card frames at their other locations which are all within a 2 or 3 block walk.

The thing that I loved about 1 Shubert Alley was that it not only looked and felt historic, but they had everything that the theatres were sold out of. The staff was friendly, the prices were competitive and the soundtracks playing were a lot of fun. If you want a real broadway experience and want the perfect place to buy broadway merchandise after seeing a show, check out 1 Shubert Alley which is also the address of the broadway shop in NYC.

So I just got back from another trip to NYC and this time decided to see the off broadway version of Avenue Q at the stages theatre. So before we get into the review, I wanted to go over what off-broadway is vs. on broadway and what you can expect. If you don’t want to read the post, then my review is a good one and you should definitely check out Avenue Q at the Stages Theatre off broadway. You can buy tickets by clicking on the goldstar or ticket liquidator banners in the right hand side of this blog.

Off broadway shows are pretty much the exact same thing as broadway shows except the theatres are smaller and you are extremely close to the actors. The talent is amazing, the sets are scaled down for some shows, but the quality is still very high. Off broadway show openings are usually more unknown or are up and coming shows where broadway usually has box office and big budget shows opening. That’s pretty much the only difference between off broadway shows and on broadway shows. So now that you know the difference, lets go over the now off broadway version of Avenue Q at the stages theatre in NYC.

I absolutely love this show. Everything from my favorite characters Kate and the Bad News Bears to Princeton and Christmas Eve makes me laugh my ass off and want to sing a long. If you have never seen the show but only listened to the soundtrack, you’ll notice a few changes. 1. The bad news bears are in the show and play the bad influence on the characters and 2. Time sensitive things like George Bush during the ending song is replaced with Fox News.

The show was a Sunday Matinee show so it was kind of early. The cast seemed to be a little off when it started and no one was really working the songs like I thought they would have, however by the middle of the first half, Kate, Christmas Eve, Trekky and everyone else was belting out tunes and brought the show to life. The only character that was really not well done was Brian. The guy was probably just having an off day, but it seemed like he wasn’t in the mood to do the show and was just at a rehearsal. He was talented and all but it just didn’t feel like he was giving it his all. Overall the entire performance was fantastic and I would definitely go to see it again.

The cast was great, the show is awesome and because the theatre is small you get to really see everything which is amazing. Avenue Q at the stages theatre in NYC is 100% worth seeing even though it is off broadway. The show is still great and because it is off broadway it seemed like the tickets are even cheaper. If you are heading to NYC and want to see Avenue Q at the stages theatre, click the Goldstar and Ticket Liquidator banners in the right hand side of this blog and you’ll find great deals on Avenue Q in New York City tickets as well as a ton of other shows.

So I finally gave in and went up to Baltimore Maryland for Showtunes Night at the Hippo bar and lounge. I absolutely love the Hippo for dancing on Saturday nights, but I was a bit curious to see how they would do showtunes. Sure you have a ton of gays in Baltimore and they love theatre just as much as everyone else, but could Baltimore have an actual showtunes night? The answer is Yes!

I have to be honest, it wasn’t my favorite showtunes event at a bar when we first got there. The VJ kept on playing Glee after Glee after Glee. Then we saw Lea Michele in Ragtime and then another thing about Glee when he announced the show spin off. The Glee over and over got old and annoying fast. I love Glee like no tomorrow, but at a showtunes night I want to hear showtunes and that is where I really enjoyed showtunes night at the Hippo.

Instead of playing a million mainstream songs, the VJ played a few hits, but also many lesser known songs from shows. With La Cage Aux Follies, instead of playing a little more mascara or I am what I am, he played a huge dance routine and a lesser known yet equally as fabulous song. Instead of Children will listen from Into the Woods, he played the song about the couple who wanted a child. I loved the fact that the VJ played a good mix of well known and lesser known showtunes. It not only helps to show people that there are more than just ballads and belters on broadway, but it also helps to get people to love new songs. My only complain about playing lesser known casts is that he would line up a cast singing a song from a show, then play another outtake from the show, then a song from the movie version of the show. That got old fast. When I’m at showtunes, I don’t mind two songs in a row if one is a parody, but two or three songs from the same show in a row and none of them are parodies or unique, that’s a bit much.

So overall, Baltimore has a pretty kick ass showtunes night at the Hippo Bar and Lounge. The audience is awesome and loves to sing. The bartender is cute as heck and serves awesome drinks. The showtunes are great, but repetitive and overall it is worth going to. I give it around a 4 out of 5 stars as far as showtunes nights go. If you are in Baltimore on a Tuesday night, check out the Hippo Bar for Showtunes and then come back here and leave a comment with what you think. Thank you again Hippo for having me and everyone that I met. You guys have a great showtunes night that is definitely a great time.

So I have absolutely no clue what the Helen Hayes Awards is or what they are for, but my friend sent me an invite to an opened to everyone party (that actually sounds kind of lame) at the Jefferson hotel Quill bar. According to the invitation below to the Helen Hayes Awards showtunes party, there is no cover which is nice, cocktails which is better, but most importantly, sing a long showtunes where you are encouraged to belt out as loud as you can. That is why it got my attention. This bitch loves to belt out showtunes, especially when drinking cocktails and having fun with other theatre queens. Here is the invite to the Helen Hayes Awards showtunes party in Washington DC.

I’ll more than likely be there as well with my camera taking random photos to review the event for this blog as well. If you end up coming, feel free to say hi if you see me.

So I recently got back from a trip to NYC, which is also home to broadway, tons of stars and also bed bugs. Unfortunately for one of my friends, they didn’t see the show Hairspray, but they did bring home something like the NYC version of Cooties, Bedbugs. Although we didn’t see Hairspray, it is just like the song Cooties from Hairspray where these little bastard bugs just seem like they are crawling everywhere and you cannot get rid of them. Not only do you have to throw things out, but it is seriously expensive to try and treat them. I feel seriously sorry for my friend, but I also cannot resist singing the Cooties song from Hairspray to him as well. Anyways, although Bedbugs aren’t actually Cooties, the song is funny and I did learn a few things that everyone should do when they are coming home from New York City so that they can try to reduce the risk of getting Bedbugs.

1. Unpack your bags outside of your house or apartment. Not only will this let you look through your clothes and suitcase to make sure you aren’t bringing bedbugs home from NYC, but you’ll also have a chance to shake everything out before it goes into your house.

2. Bring a plastic bag and load everything you shake out into it. This way if any bedbugs did crawl into your bags or suitcase while on the trip, they are now contained in the plastic bag. m

3. Immediately put everything in the dryer for at least 25 minutes on high heat. Apparently putting your clothes and everything else in the dryer on high heat will kill bed bugs.

4. Buy sprays and use them in your suitcase. You cannot be too careful and these things are hard to find or see sometimes. It never hurts to spray your suitcase down with bed bug spray. Use it in all of the pockets, in the lining and everywhere else. They can get into everything and hide in everything.

5. Search your room when you get to NYC. One of the best things to protect yourself from Bed Bugs in NYC is to check out websites like the Bed Bug report for recent infestations, but also to check out the room yourself. If you see any or think you do, request a refund and find a new hotel.

6. Store your suitcase in the bathroom. I’m not sure if this is true, but apparently bed bugs do not like or live in bathrooms. If your bathroom is big enough, store your suitcase in it and if they don’t live in there there is a chance your bags are safer.

Bedbugs are not fun at all, but unfortunately you may get them if you go to NYC. Be smart and search your hotel room before you stay there or unpack and if you see them, check into somewhere else. In the meantime, lets hope my friend is able to get rid of his bedbugs and also sing Cooties from Hairspray to him because it is kind of funny and will at least make him laugh.

Last week I went to one of the screenings of Catch Me if You Can on Broadway. Not only is the musical version of Catch Me if You Can an absolutely fun show to see, but it was sort of like Fosse on steroids. You could completely see that Catch me if you can the musical was not only created by the people who created the broadway show Hairspray, but the music, the energy and the dancing was absolutely phenomenal. I wouldn’t say it is in my top ten favorite shows, but it is definitely one I recommend that everyone goes to see. It has everything you want in a broadway show and catch me if you can on broadway leaves you smiling and wanting more. The only complaint I have is that they didn’t have window cards for sale and you cannot download the songs on iTunes yet. Here is my Catch Me if you Can review.

The show starts out at the very end. The main character ends up getting caught by the Feds and then proceeds to tell his story. The story is pretty much the same as the one in the movie, with the exception that Frank doesn’t steal from his Dad. Instead the Dad is made out to be one of the bad guys and the Mom is painted as a good guy, even though she is an Adulterer. The opening song is full of a ton of energy and really solid dancing. There are lights flashing everywhere and it is all about being “Live in Living Color”. You get to meet the entire cast and Frank even walks you through when and how he will meet each of them. It is also the scene where I think he mentions one of the sayings for the show tshirt, “I like girls”. I think just about every theatre queen in Rehoboth, Fire Island and PTown that has seen the show will be wearing that tshirt this summer.

Catch me if you can the musical then walks you through the story and the name changes of Frank and the way that the IRS or FBI guy hunts him down. You watch as Frank’s father meets his mother in France. As they fall in love and even as Frank finally settles down in Atlanta, only to move to New Orleans to marry the nurse he falls for. The musical Catch Me if You Can is absolutely hilarious and has an amazing soundtrack. The dancing is overdone and the movements are extremely exaggerated, but it keeps your attention and you never get bored. What’s even more fun is that Frank constantly talks about illusions and the slight of hand and even does a few magic tricks on stage.

The set isn’t that impressive. It looks like something pulled out of the 60′s or 70′s and flashes like you are at studio 54. It is almost exactly the same style as Hairspray, but then again it still sort of works. Unfortunately it looks like this may be the last musical that works with this same theme as Broadway audiences will eventually tire of the same exact dance styles, set designs and music. Luckily this show has an awesome story, extremely talented actors and will hopefully land its place in the 2011 season and tour. It has everything you could want in a Broadway show, but it is extremely similar to hairspray which could also be its downfall. Overall I would give Catch me if you can the musical 4 out of 5 stars. The only reason it doesn’t get a fifth star is that it was a copy off of Hairspray. The soundtrack is amazing, the acting was great and I loved the show, but I was hoping to see something different from the people who produced it. Catch me if you can the musical is one you should definitely check out if you are in New York City and for me, Catch me if you can reviews are that the show is one that you don’t want to miss.

Seth Rudetsky

Seth Rudetsky

So I was in Manhattan and got a chance to head to the times square information center for Seth Rudetsky’s Live on Broadway show. Unfortunately we arrived to late and since we didn’t have a seat I didn’t get to be in the showtunes showdown. Unfortunately I actually would have won since they asked questions I actually knew the answers to for a change but ohh well. Anyways, for the first time ever, they didn’t actually have a broadway star special guest. Instead they had a person who makes fun of vocal coaches on Youtube…and to be honest she was funny, but it wasn’t the same as a real star. On the other hand, Julie James and Seth completely took over and Julie’s voice completely kicks ass!

Because there was no star, Julie and Seth took over. Julie sang an amazing song, I can’t remember the name right now and instead of Seth interviewing someone, Julie James interviewed him. One of the things we all love about when Seth Rudetsky interviews someone is that he always asks about something that happens behind the scenes during a show and usually the broadway star will share something. In this case Seth told us a story about when he was playing for the Phantom of the Opera.

There is a scene in the show where Christine rips the Phantom’s mask off his face and throws it to the ground. We all know that Seth is an amazing piano player and really gets into the music he plays. You can actually see his eyes light up when he goes for his keyboard. So Seth was playing the song and when Christine threw the mask it bounced off of the stage and landed next to Seth. So what would any gay diva piano player do when the Phantom’s mask lands next to them while they’re playing the music to the show? He put it on.

Julie James

Not only did Seth get completely into the role, but while he was playing the Phantom of the Opera on his keyboard, wearing the mask, he felt like he was actually the Phantom, until the stage manager or someone freaked out and let Seth know that the mask was custom molded to fit the Phantom, was worth $2K and Seth stretched it out to fit his bigger face and ruin the Phantom’s mask. Anyone else probably would have been fired immediately but Seth is absolutely adorable and lovable and I don’t think anyone could fire him.

If you are ever in NYC on a Wed and can make it to times square around noon, you have to check out Seth Rudetsky and Julie James’s live on broadway show at the Times square information center. Thank you Seth and Julie for an amazing show and Julie for performing since they didn’t have another star. She did an amazing job and it was incredible to hear her sing. Thank you again Seth and Julie.
